College of Public Health and KIPRC Launch Inaugural 5K for National Public Health Week
The University of Kentucky College of Public Health (CPH), in partnership with the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC), is excited to host the inaugural Preventing Injuries with Every Step 5K on Sunday, April 6, at Coldstream Park in Lexington. The race celebrates 20 years of CPH’s impact on public health and serves as the official kickoff for National Public Health Week.
“This event is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of public health and a reflection of our commitment to promoting safer, healthier communities,” said Terry Bunn, PhD, director of KIPRC. “We invite everyone to join us in raising awareness about injury prevention while enjoying a fun and active day.”
The Preventing Injuries with Every Step 5K offers activities for participants of all ages. 5K runners and 1-mile walkers will enjoy a flat route along the scenic Legacy Trail at Coldstream Park.
The 5K race will feature chip timing by RaceRise with awards presented to the top three male and female overall finishers and the top three male and female finishers in five-year age groups. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt sponsored by Hicks & Funfsinn, PLLC, a personal injury law firm based in Lexington, along with free race photos, including a chance to win the finish line photo contest. For families, the event includes a free Kid’s Dash for children aged nine and under, plus a food truck and DJ music to keep the celebration going.
Before and after the race, participants can stop by injury prevention stations offering expert tips on staying safe while running.
Those unable to attend in person can still join the fun by registering as a virtual runner or walker, supporting from anywhere in the U.S.
Celebrating National Public Health Week
The race marks the start of National Public Health Week, which runs from April 7-13. This year’s events will focus on the impact of public health on everyday life—from creating safe neighborhoods and protecting the environment to ensuring access to clean food and water and strengthening community connections.
Throughout the week, CPH will host a series of engaging events, service activities, and educational programs that showcase public health’s impact, purpose, and pathway to a healthier future.
