The Kentucky Drug Overdose Alert System (KDOAS) is a drug overdose spike detection and notification system developed by KIPRC and the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH).

KDOAS continuously monitors multiple near-real-time data sources for signs of unusual increases in suspected overdose activity by county. When a potential spike is detected, the data are reviewed and confirmed and KDPH promptly issues an alert email with a pre-cleared flyer intended for broad outreach and sharing. KDOAS is used by state and local public health, prevention coalitions, harm reduction and treatment partners, and other stakeholders involved in overdose response.

Features

  • Multiple rapid data sources, unified into one consistent workflow to support partners’ situational awareness;

  • Alerts describe where suspected overdoses occurred and/or were treated, depending on the data source;

  • Each activation is reviewed by staff before sending to reduce false positives and prevent alert fatigue;

  • Alerts include pre-cleared messaging and a ready-to-share flyer for broad community outreach;

  • KDOAS is continuously improving; please share feedback with us so we can make the alerts more useful.
